MELBOURNE, Mar 23 (Reuters) South Africa's Anika Smith equalled her personal best of 1.91 metres to win the Commonwealth Games women's high jump gold medal today. The 19-year-old strung together an almost perfect sequence of jumps, failing just once on her first attempt at the winning height.

Wales' Julie Crane finished second after clearing 1.88m.

She was denied a third chance of clearing 1.91m when the judges ruled she had broken the line of the bar as she pulled out of her initial attempt at the last moment.

The bronze medal went to Jamaica's Karen Beautle, who was one of six competitors to go out of the competition at 1.88m but was awarded third place on a countback.
