People turned out in hordes in Amethi, Parliamentary constituency of Sonia's son Rahul to welcome her decision to resign following BJP and Samajwadi Party's objections on her holding an 'office of profit'.

Raising slogans, people burnt the effigies of Rajnath and Advani.

Sonia was elected to Lok Sabha from Amethi in 1998. People said the move would force the Opposition sit back and appreciate her decision.

In Rae Bareli, while people lamented the development, they expressed happinesss that Sonia would contest the elections again from the seat.

People took to streets shouting pro-Sonia Gandhi slogans after the news of her resignation was announced.

Equating her with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, locals shouted slogans and gathered at Tilak Bhawan -- the Rae Bareli Congress office.

''People of Rae Bareli are not unhappy with the decision...they are happy that she has taken the wind out of Opposition's onslaught on the 'office of profit' issue,'' said Uttar Pradesh Congress chief spokesperson A P Singh in the state capital.

UP Congress welcomed Sonia's move and claimed it would force the Opposition to rethink its strategy. ''After refusing the post of PM, her latest decision proves she thinks beyond such petty posts,'' said Congress leader and former chief minister Ram Naresh Yadav in Lucknow.

Just before the last general elections, Sonia announced to field her son Rahul from the Amethi seat and decided to fight elections from the neighbouring Rae Bareli. Mrs Indira Gandhi too had represented the Rae Bareli seat in Lok Sabha.

In 1999, she was elected to the 13th LS from Amethi, where she became the Leader of the Opposition.

She was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from the Rae Bareli constituency of UP.
