President awards Kirti Chakra to bank guard posthumously

New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today awarded Kirti Chakra to Rugha Ram, a bank guard, posthumously.

The President presented the medal to his widow Kamla Devi at an investiture ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan here.

Rugha Ram, posted as gunman at the Punjab and Sind Bank's Surewala branch in Rajasthan, was killed during a clash with armed robbers on June 6, 2005, according to a release here.

The alert guard not only protected the bank assets worth Rs 7.58 lakh but also saved many lives of the staff and the customers present at the time of the attempted robbery.
