New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) In recognition of the emphatic Gold-medal wins by Kunjarani Devi and Renubala Chanu in weightlifting and as a tribute to their determination to excel despite the turbulent circumstances in their home state Manipur, Chief Of Army Staff Gen JJ Singh today complimented the sportspersons and their family members and gifted them both with a cheque of Rs One Lakh each.

The cheques were handed over to the family members at Mantripukhri by Officiating GOC 3 Corps Major General AK Samantaray on behalf of the Army Chief in the presence of civil officials and Sports Authority of India personnel, an official spokesperson announced here.

A similar award of Rs 75,000 has also been given to Manipur's L Monika Devi who bagged silver in weightlifting in the Commonwealth Games currently on at Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Gen JJ Singh left for Melbourne today to witness the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth games. The Indian Army Chief had been requested by the Indian Olympic Committee to witness these games in his capacity as Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Committee and Chairperson of the Ceremonial Committee for the Commonwealth Games 2010 scheduled to be held in New Delhi.

The Army Chief's visit would also boost the morale of the 13 Army personnel who form part of the Indian Commonwealth Games squad.

Amongst these sports persons, eight have been receiving training under the Army's Mission Olympics and Army Marksmanship Unit -- two Key Projects of the Chief of Army Staff.

So far, the Army personnel have won two Gold medals and an equal number of Silvers at the ongoing Games. They are Sub B Tamang and Hav Vijay Kumar (Team Gold in Pistol Rapid Fire), Maj Saroja Kumari (Team gold in Sports Pistol) and Lt Col RS Rathore (Silver in Team Double Trap event).

This visit also assumes significance as the Indian Armed Forces are hosting the World Military Games in 2007.
