Gobingarh Fort transferred to Punjab government

New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) The heritage Gobindgarh Fort at Amritsar, under the Ministry of Defence, will now be transferred to the Punjab government.

''The Fort will be declared a protective monument as it has a long Sikh history,'' Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters today after the Cabinet meeeting that took the decision on the transfer.

The Fort, measuring 30 acres, along with additional 2.81 acres of land, will be transferred to the state government without any cost and encumbrances.

In addition, the state government will build the road that would give public access to the Fort.

The Punjab government will also construct a security wall, with security lights, along the perimeter of the Fort abutting the defence land.

''It is an emotive, historical and sentimental issue for the people of Punjab,'' Mr Dasmunsi said.
