Cong supporters arrested for burning Moily's effigy

Chennai, Mar 23: Hundreds of supporters of former Congress MLA A Sellakumar were taken into custody when they burnt in effigy Congress Working Committee member and in-charge of Tamil Nadu Congress Party affairs Veerappa Moily, protesting against his anti-party activities here today (Mar 23, 2006).

Talking to newspersons here Jayamohan a party functionary of Tiruvallur District, who was injured in the incident, and Arul Pethaiah AICC member alleged that Mr Moily had surrendered the interest of the TNCC to the DMK by accepting all the conditions laid down by the DMK president M Karunanidhi.

They alleged that out of 48 constituencies, most of them allotted to the the Congress were not favourable to the party.

They also alleged that in some of the Constituencies the sitting MLAs seats were snatched away.

They urged the Party President Sonia Gandhi to ask the authorities concerned to reconsider the allocation of 48 constituencies and to ensure the allocation of safe constituencies for the Congress.

They further alleged that Mr Moily had allotted 50 per cent of the 48 constituencies to the followers of former TNCC president and Union Minister G K Vasan and it is against the democratic noms of the party.

Earlier, the demonstrators raised anit-Moily slogans.
