New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) An emergency meeting of the Congress was held here this evening in the wake of Congress President Sonia Gandhi announcing her resignation from Lok Sabha membership and from the office of chairperson of the National Advisory Council.

The meeting, held at 24 Akbar Road Headquarters of the AICC,was attended by CWC members,AICC office bearers, senior party leaders and a couple of Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled States.

Before reaching the AICC Headquarters from her official residence, Ms Gandhi waved to the crowd of supporters collected outside her official residence thanking them for their support extended to her.The supporters were shouting slogans urging her to continue to fight against the campaign launched against her by the Opposition.

The meeting of senior party leaders is likely to pass a resolution putting on record the "renunciation" and "sacrifice" displayed by Ms Gandhi in having resigned as MP and Chairperson of the National Advisory Council.

The meeting is also likely to condemn the Opposition parties for launching a campaign targetting her by propagating that an Ordinance was being brought particularly to benefit Ms Gandhi to save her from disqualification of the Lok Sabha membership on the ground of holding a office of profit as a Chairperson of the NAC.
