City Beautiful to be made greener
Chandigarh, Mar 23 (UNI) The Chandigarh Administration has decided to carry out a massive tree plantation drive and cover all such vacant plots upon which at least ten trees can be planted to make the city more greener and maintain the ecological balance of nature.
This was disclosed by the Finance Secretary S K Sandhu while addressing the gathering during the 'World Forestry Day' celebrated by the Department of Forests, Wildlife and Environment here on Tuesday.
He said that the endeavour of the Administration would be to plant maximum possible trees all over Chandigarh to further improve its green cover as the forests need not only be to developed on the outer boundaries or periphery of the city. He further urged the people especially the younger generation and the elderly population to participate actively for the success of this drive.
The Director Forests, Wildlife and Environment, Mr Ishwar Singh will hold meeting with the Residents Welfare Societies shortly to identify the vacant places where the plantation drive can be carried out. Although Chandigarh already has over one third of its total area under green cover but the efforts would be to transcend even that limit.
