CEC reviews poll preparations in Asom

Guwahati, Mar 23 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon today reviewed all aspects of poll preparedness in Asom with senior state government officials here.

Later talking to newsmen Mr Tandon said preparations were going on in the right direction.

''We have decided to deploy 88 observers for the second round of polls in Asom,'' he said, adding that 44 observers had already arrived in the state for the first phase of polls on April 3. The seconf phase would be held on April 10.

He disclosed that 21 additional documents had been prescribed by the Commission for voters identity in the state as photo identity cards had not yet been issued to the electorate in Asom.

''Electronic Voting Machines(EVMs) training is in progress and all poll personnel have been given proper training for proper use of the EVMs,'' he said.

Mr Tandon was accompanied by two Election Commissioners, Mr Navin Chawla and Mr N Gopalaswamy. The Commission met the state Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary and Director General of Police and discussed with them the proper deployment of security forces, including para military personnel, during the polls, Mr Tandon said.

The BJP, NCP and Congress have met the Commission separately and submitted memoranda highlighting their views, he said.
