19 NITs to be brought under NIT Act

New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today approved the proposal to introduce the National Institutes of Technology Bill, 2006 in Parliament, bringing all the 19 NITs within the ambit of the NIT Act.

''This would enable the NITs to become centres of excellence like IITs,'' Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

The new Act will also fulfill the need of the country for quality manpower in engineering, science and technology, he said.
