'Women empowerment is necessary'

Hyderabad, Mar 22: Andhra Prades Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has said women should be given due recognition in political, education, social services and health, sectors.

Addressing the eight-day International Workshop on empowerment of women through rural enterprises yesterday, being jointly organised by NISIET and Afro-Asian Rural Development Organisation (AARDO), here, the Chief Minister said unless women, who constitute, 50 per cent of the population, participate in a big way in the economic activities, the society cannot prosper.

Dr Reddy stressed upon the need to extend academic support, training and updating of skills to ensure the upliftment of women.

Capacity building is an important aspect in women empowerment and the State Government had taken positive steps in this respect, he added.
