UP civil police empowered to check and challan vehicles

Lucknow, Mar 22 (UNI) In a major decision, Uttar Pradesh government today empowered the civil police to check vehicles violating traffic norms in the state.

The civil police comprising the rank of Sub Inspector, Inspector and the Station House Officer (SHO) have been vested with the power to check vehicles and impose fine accordingly.

The decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting here, chaired by chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Earlier, only traffic police was entrusted with the duty to check vehicles.

According to sources, the decision was taken to curb the growing incidents of traffic rules violation on the lines of Delhi.

As road traffic proliferates immensely, it was hard for the handful traffic police sleuths to control it, sources said adding the civil police would be more effective in minding the task.
