Bihar government to clear dues of sugar cane farmers

Patna, Mar 22 (UNI) Bihar Sugarcane Minister Nitish Mishra today announced that the state government would pay the dues of the sugar cane farmers worth Rs 8.84 crore.

Replying to a debate on the issue in the State Legislative Council, Mr Mishra said the state government had decided to boost this industry.

He said the state government had initiated several steps to promote the sugar industry and pay the dues of the farmers to boost sugar production.

The state government had raised the procurement price of sugarcane from Rs 95 to 108, an increase by 14 per cent, he added.

The sugarcane was earlier not covered under the crop insurance scheme but it was later included in the said scheme after the intervention of the state government, he mentioned.

The minister informed the house that 36 companies had expressed their willingness for invest in this industry, including other states like Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh.
