Jammu, Mar 22 (UNI) The Joint Review Committee today recommended the release of 40 detenues lodged in Jammu and Kashmir jails.

The committee, which reviewed the cases of all 403 detenues, recommended the immediate release of 40 persons.

The decision came in view of the assurances given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his address at the roundtable last month.

Mr Singh had directed the state government to peruse all the cases of detention to find out if there was any possibility of releasing those against whom there were no serious cases.

He had also directed the government to complete the process before the end of March.

Earlier in October last, the committee had released 44 detenues.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad recently said in the Legislative Assembly that the release of detenues would help the misguided youth to join the mainstream besides strengthening the peace process.
