World Poetry day begins

Gangtok, Mar 21 (UNI) The two-day long seventh World Poetry day began here today with poets from different parts of the country as well as from Nepal reciting their creations to eradicate racism, bring various languages closer to each other and to bring world peace through poems.

March 21 is being observed as a World Poetry day all over the world after UNESCO in 2000 declared as the World poetry Day.

Sikkim Akademi in collaboration with the Poets Foundation Kolkata is organising the world poetry day this time here.

Poets foundation General Secretary Pradip Chaudhuri said besides recitation of poems, book releases, discussions and interaction would mark the two day long festival and an effort would be made to assess the trend of modern poetry in different part of the region.

In addition to organising Poetry Day the foundation was also trying to establish a poet village, an old age home and a publishing unit.

Inaugurating the function Sikkim Acting Chief Minister D D Bhutia thanked the Sikkim Akademi and the Poets Foundation for choosing Sikkim for the venue.

He said the state has seven regional languages and his government was committed to developing all the languages.
