Protests over molestation of girl in custody

Imphal, Mar 12: Several organisations today (Mar 12, 2006) staged sit in demonstration in different parts of Manipur to protest the alleged molestation and torture of a girl in police custody.

The Manipur Students' Association, Delhi, in a statement sent here said a sit in protest was also staged yesterday at Jantar Mantar in the capital and it was supported by the Communist Gadar Party, All India Students' Federation, Revolutionary Democratic Front, Yuva Morcha, North East Students' Joint Action Committee, Forum for Democratic Initiatives, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union, and other bodies.

The protestors demanded the resignation of Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh and actions against the involved police personnel.

The state government have already started a magisterial inquiry into the matter and suspended five police personnel over this issue.
