Tchno-economic feasibility study clears National Waterway

New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) The government is actively considering a proposal to develop Kakinada-Podicherry canals along Godavari and Krishna rivers as a National Waterway.

According to the ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, a techo-economic feasibility study of the proposal conducted by Inland Waterways Authority of India has found the proposed project viable.

However, no specific time-frame could be provided at this stage.

The waterway includes 907 kms of waterways in Andhra Pradesh--171 kms of Godavari river, 157 kms of Krishna river, 50 km of Kakinada canal, 139 kms of Eluru canal, 113 kms of Commaur canal and 277 kms of north Buckingham canal.

The development cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 542 crore and it is expected to take seven years to complete.
