Polls will be 'mini' general elections: AIFB Leader

Chennai, Mar 11 (UNI) All India Foward Block (AIFB) General Secretary Debabrata Biswas today said elections to five state assemblies will be akin to 'mini' general elections as they will lead to tremendous change in the national political scenario.

Speaking to newspersons after calling on Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence here with West Bengal Food and Consumer Affairs Minister and Party Central Committee Member Naren Dey and AIFB Tamil Nadu President M Karthick, Mr Biswas said seat sharing for the May eight elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly did not figure during the discussions.

They discussed only general political developments. During his visit to the city, he had met CPI, CPI (M) leaders and DMK President M Karunanidhi.

In this series, he had called on Ms Jayalalithaa today, Mr Biswas claimed while dismissing any speculation on the meeting having any political or election significance.

The election strategy of the party's Tamil Nadu unit will be decided at its state conference to be held in Tirunelvi tomorrow.

The conference was a preparatory meet for the Assembly elections.

However, it will also discuss strategies on strengthening the party in the state, he said.

On the national political scenario, Mr Biswas said all the four Left parties were working on forming a Left-led alternative to the BJP as well as the Congress at the national level which would materialise after the ensuing elections to the five State Assemblies.

To a question, he said political parties, especially the Left were totally upset with the 20-month rule of the UPA Government at the Centre, especially on economic and foreign policy issues.

The main agenda of the Left was to fight against the UPA Government's unpopular approach to economic and foreign policy.
