Uranium export to India: Australia to watch developments

Chennai, Mar 8: Australian Prime Minister John Howard today (Mar 8, 2006) said his country will watch further developments following the signing of the nuclear deal between India and the United States, before deciding on removing the ban on export of Uranium to India.

He made this remark at a brief inter-active session at the IIT Madras after signing of two MoUs in his presence.

Asked was there any change in Australia's stand in providing Uranium to India, Mr Howard dropped enough hints that there was no change in its stand at present.

''We have a 30-year-old policy. We don't provide Uranium to any country which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Now only India and US have signed the joint agreement. We will wait and see the further developments'', he added.

''But as of now there was no change in our 30-year-old policy'', Mr Howard said.
