Srinagar, Mar 2: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) today (Mar 2, 2006) said it was ready to counter any threat posed by infiltration from across the Line of Control (LoC) in the wake of melting of snow on the upper reaches of the Kashmir valley.

"We are ready to tackle any problem that may come up with the melting of snow on the upper reaches of the Valley. The militants start crossing the LoC once the snow starts melting on the mountains," CRPF Director General Jyoti Kumar Sinha told a news conference here.

He said the militants try to cross the border immediately after the snow starts melting.

However, Mr Sinha said the CRPF was determined to thwart any attempt by the militants to cause large-scale disturbances in the Valley.

He said about 1500 militants are active in the Valley at present.

"These are the latest figure made available by the State Government and other security agencies," Mr Sinha added.

He said the CRPF was a well-equipped and experienced force and could handle any situation.
