Guwahati, Mar 2: The Congress in Assam today announced that it would fight the coming Assembly polls under a collective leadership.

Talking to newsmen, Congress state President Bhubaneshwar Kalita made it clear that the party would not project any Chief Ministerial candidate.

''There would be no individual leadership. Collective leadership will guide the party in the polls'', said Mr Kalita who announced that the party would contest most of the seats. The party had won 71 seats last time on its own and is likely to tie-up with Bodo party led by Hagrama Basumatary.

He also said a stringent procedure would be maintained in the selection of candidates.

''Applications would be invited, there would be block level reports, then district level reports which would select the candidates'', he said.

Welcoming the schedule announced by the Election Commission (EC), Mr Kalita said they were happy and ready to face challenges from any party.
