Puri,Mar 01(UNI) Two labourers, working in a field in BirRamchandrapur village under Sakhigopal Police station, were trampled to death today by wild elephants which possibly strayed in from the Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary.

Police said two adult pachyderms sneaked into the village this morning and attacked the residents when confronted.

The labourers, identified as Budhia Bhoi and Padia Bhoi, fell on the ground while trying to flee on seeing the approaching elephants.

The animals trampled them and fled to a nearby jungle.

While one of them died on the spot the other succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital.

The Forest officials and personnel from the Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary rushed to the village on hearing the news and launched a combing operation to track the movements of the beasts but in vain.
