Gwalior, MP, Mar 1 (UNI) A racket, involved in stealing banker's cheque and getting it encashed, was busted after police arrested a person and seized two banker's cheques besides three passports from him.

SP Manmeet Singh Narang said Anirudh Mukherjee approached SBI's Maharajbada branch yesterday for encashing American Express (AE) Bank's banker's cheques of 500 and 100 dollars.

On contacting AE's call centre in Gurgaon, bank officials learnt that the cheques had been stolen. The officials were requested to hand over the accused to police.

Mr Narang said Anirudh possessed two UK passports and one Canadian passport bearing his photographs but made in separate names.

The accused had so far encashed Rs 7.5 lakh dollars by depositing around 3,000 cheques.

Meanwhile, Anirudh said he was merely a pawn in the racket. A Sri Lankan, Rajeev Kumar, who currently resides in Navi Mumbai, is behind the gang.

Rajeev made available the stolen cheques to Anirudh, who got 10 per cent of the encashed amount as commission.

Police were acting on the information made available by the accused.
