Sabarmati Jail inmates clashed 44 times during the year
Gandhinagar, Mar 1 (UNI) Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah today infomed the Legislative Assembly that a total of 46 crimes, including murder of an undertrial prisoner Chetan Shankarlal Patel alias Battery, were reported from the Sabarmati Central Jail during the current year.
Replying to a written question raised by BJP MLA Pradeepsinh Jadeja during Question Hour, Mr Shah said 44 of the registered crimes pertained to infighting between the prisoners. One crime was registered for possession of weapons while another pertained to possession of drugs, Mr Shah said.
To a supplementary question, the Minister said action have been taken in all these cases. A separate case under IPC 302,307,324, 120(B) and 34 has been registered against six prisoners and five jail officials at the Sabarmati Police Station.
He further informed the House that of these five erring jail officials, two are presently lodged in jails while other three are out on bail.
He further stated that to enhance security, safety and maintenance of law and order in the central jails in Ahmedabad and Vadodara cities, two police officers of IPS cadre have been appointed. Besides, hardcore prisoners have been transferred to various jails in the state.
To reduce overcrowding in jails, two new central jails will soon be built, Mr Shah added.
