AIMECA clarifies certificates need AICTE approval

Chennai, Mar 1 (UNI) The All India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association (AIMECA) today clarified that degree certificates issued by deemed universities without the approval of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) were not valid.

Condemning the violent incidents on the premises of the self-financed SRM Institute of Science and Technology here and the attack on newspersons, AIMECA President T D Naidu said there was no place for violence in an academic institution.

The students went on the rampage yesterday as the B Tech course offered by the deemed university did not get the AICTE's approval.

Stating that the deemed universities had only administrative powers like admission, preparation of syllabus and curriculum, conducting examinations and issuing degree certificates, Mr Naidu said it was the fundamental right of students and their parents to ask for the AICTE approval of the course undertaken by them.
