W B voters list published today

Kolkata, Feb 22 (UNI) The West Bengal electoral roll for all the 294 constituencies was published today, even as about 13 lakh names-- the highest in recent times, were deleted under the Election Commission's directive.

Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen anoounced that the total number of voters was 4.89 crores. While 12.98 lakh names had been deleted, 21.5 lakh new names had been included. He said in actuality 8.51 lakh additional voters had been added to the list.

He said previously the total electorate was 4.81 crores, this time it is 4.89 crores, which is an increase of 1.76 per cent.

In 2005 the total deletion was 3.39 lakhs and in 2004 it was 3.47 lakhs.

Mr Sen said of the 13 lakhs deleted this time, suo moto deletion was 10.72 lakhs and through filing form 7, it was another 2.21 lakh Photo rolls for 46 assembly constituencies were also published, he added.

To a question, the CEO said the deletion of names was the result of a joint initiative taken by the Election Commission and the state machinery. But new names as well as deletion of names would continue till the filing of nominations, he added.
