SMC undertakes renovation work of Rang Upavan

Surat, Feb 22 (UNI) The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has undertaken the renovation work on Rang Upavan, the city's open air auditorium.

The SMC authorities said that the hall once renovated will have a new roof and seating arrangements to accommodate thousands of people and to conduct cultural programmes. It is being renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 45 lakh.

The new hall will be available to those who want to arrange classical cultural programmes at a nominal rate, they added.

At Rang Upavan, gifted Surti actor Hariwala Jhariwala who was later became popular as Sanjeev Kumar in Hindi films, first performed his dramas here.

Inaugurated in 1955 by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the hall completed half-a-century of its prformances last year.
