Mumbai, Feb 23 (UNI) Wild card Shiv Nikam of Maharashtra continued his giant-killing spree when he shocked top seed and compatriot Rakshay Thakkar 6-3, 6-0 to breeze into the boys semi-finals, in the 10th Wilson-Wodehouse Gymkhana All India National Ranking Championship Series Tennis Tournament at the Wodehouse Gymkhana, Cooperage here today.
Playing attacking, all round tennis, Nikam, whose impressive win has made him the toast of the competition, turned the match around after recovering from 0-40 in the third game. His remarkable comeback upset Thakkar's rhythm as he played under pressure after losing the opening set.
Nikam, who impressed with powerful ground strokes and down-the-line winners, capped his significant win by serving out the second set and match with an ace.
''Coming back from 0-40 in the third game was the turning point for me,'' said an excited Nikam. ''I still can't believe I beat the top seed. I think I surprised Rakshay with my attacking game and that upset his rhythm.'' Nikam experienced another rewarding day when he teamed up with Saurabh Patil to enter the doubles final following a thrilling 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 11-9 win over Alla Abhishek and Y Sriman of Andhra Pradesh.
Top seed Shweta Rana of Delhi will take on doubles partner and No. 2 seed Natalia Khaneijo of Maharashtra in the girls final after both fashioned convincing semi-final wins.
