NRI who flew to US on stolen passport refused bail

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) A city court today denied bail to an NRI who has allegedly stolen a passport from Union External Affairs Ministry and secured permanent residency in the US.

Special CBI judge Vinod Goyal refused to grant him bail on the ground that he may flee from the country.

Avtar Singh had allegedly conspired with an External Affairs Ministry employee and stolen a passport in the name of one R E Williams in 1995.

Singh substituted the photo on the passport with his own and took off for the US as R E Williams in June that year.

He was granted permanent residency in that country on the basis of the passport in 2003.

Singh was, however, arrested at the Indira Gandhi Airport when he came to India in January, this year.
