JD(S) volunteers arrested for picketing assembly
Pondicherry, Feb 24 (UNI) As many as 91 volunteers of the Janata Dal(Secular), including 40 women, were arrested when they took out a procession to picket the Legislative assembly to press their demands.
Demanding immediate holding of panchayat elections and provision of higher wages to the mill workers here among other things, the volunteers took out a procession from Annasaalai through the main thoroughfares of the town.
Meanwhile, the Swadeshi and Bharathi mill workers today resorted to agitation before the assembly demanding enhanced wages with retrospective effect.
Meanwhile, Dhanalakshmi, widow of Nagaraj, an employee with the Agriculture Department here, observed a fast before the legislative assembly demanding job for her self on compassionate grounds.
Ms Dhanalakshmi said she is not able to run her family without any income and urged the government to provide her employment citing example of government job given to the wife of chief secretary padmanabhan, who died in service.
She said such gestures should be shown not only to the rich, but to the poor, as well.
