Guiliani stresses the power of anticipation
Mumbai, Feb 22 (UNI) Former New York Mayor Rudolph W Guiliani today underscored the importance of anticipating events in order to tide over unexpected situations.
He was speaking on the ''Principles of Leadership'' at a lecture organised by Sir Dorab Tata Memorial in association with Tata Consultancy Services here today.
Mr Guiliani, who was the New York mayor during the World Trade Centre attack, said if one thought and anticipated every possible situation, then one can handle any unexpected event since it could only be a variation of the anticipated situation.
The first principle of leadership, according to him, is to have goals. If one had goals, then a person knew what they wanted from themselves and the people around them.
To be a leader, it was also important for one to be optimistic.
Pessimistic leaders can neither guide or motivate their fellows and accomplices.
Courage was another important factor for one to be able to lead.
Making an important decision involved an element of risk and fear but one needed to overcome it and lead others on the way forward.
Teamwork and Communication were next on his list of principles and Mr Guiliani believes that it was important to find people who were better at things one was weak in as it made for a stronger team.
Also, communication formed the base of co-ordination among the people working together to be more effective and productive.
Mr Guiliani said, ''The most important thing of all is to love people around you. It makes them go beyond themselves and perform better.'' UNI ARM MA VP0002
