Govt plea on compensation for woman dismissed

Kochi, Feb 23 (UNI) The Kerala High court today dismissed an appeal filed by the state government, challenging the direction of a single judge to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation for the illegal detention of a woman at Palluruthy Relief Settlement Centre for three days by women police.

The single judge had directed the government to pay compensation to P E Arifa (32), holding that the action of the police was shocking and disturbing.

Arifa was taken into custody by the women police from her parental home at Pullappady on May 24, 1997 and brought to the 'Vanitha' (women's) police station here.

Later, she was taken to the Palluruthy Relief Settlement Centre and 'dumped' amid sickly and old destitutes for three days.

Ms Arifa filed a writ petition seeking compansation of Rs one lakh.
