Foundation stone laid for medical college in Pondy

Pondicherry, Feb 23 (UNI) Pondicherry Lt Governor M M Lakhera today laid the foundation stone for the Rs 234 crore Government Medical College here.

To be named after Perumthalaivar Kamaraj, the 40-acre complex will have medical college with hospital, cricket stadium of international standards and other facilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Lakhera said the per capita medical expenditure in the country was low compared to other countries.

People from foreign countries would come to India for treatment if the facilities available were properly utilised thereby enabling the country to earn valuable foreign exchange.

He also wanted the medical college to be one of international standard and said the work had tp be completed within the time frame.

Laying the foundation stone for the hospital, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said Pondicherry stood first in health care. About Rs 14 crore was spent annually on education.

Presently Pondicherry had 85 per cent literacy rate which need to be made 100 per cent at the earliest. He expressed the hope the college will produce efficient doctors.

Health Minister E Valsaraj laid the foundation stone for the medical college building.
