Final list of voters by first week of March EC

Coimbatore, Feb 24 (UNI) Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy today said the final list of voters for the forthcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu would be released during the first week of March.

Talking to newspersons after a review meeting with the Collectors and election officers of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, he said the Collectors had assured him that at least 90 per cent of the work for issuing Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) would be completed by then.

He said so far 55 to 60 per cent of voters had been issued EPICs. He was satisfied with the progress of work for issuing EPICs in Coimbatore, Salem and Nilgiris districts.

He said however, there were some problems in issuing EPICs in four districts and if required the contractor would be changed to complete the work in time.

Answering a question, Mr Gopalaswamy said the voters had the right to ask the authorities to take their photograph again if the first one did not come out properly.

To another question, he said there were 4.71 voters in the state in 2004. It dropped to 4.63 crore during 2005. After 100 per cent verification now there are 4.49 crore voters.

Mr Gopalasamy said the scrutiny of applications of 19 lakh nesw voters would be completed in four days time. Once they are also included in the list, the total number of voters in the state would be 4.68 crore.

Asked about the vacancy for Election Officers in 30 assembly constituencies in the state, Mr Gopalaswamy said they would be filled up soon and added after the release of the final voters list, to official will be trasferred.
