Debojit mania sweeps North East

Written by: Staff

Guwahati, Feb 23 (UNI) Debojit mania has reached its crescendo here as trouble-torn north east in unison tries hard to forget all its pains and problems for a day to back the son of the soil.

From Moreh to Mokukchang, from Agartala to Dibrugarh, it is unprecedented Debojit mania that has swept aside everything. With final for the 'Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa' musical contest coming to end tomorrow at Zee TV, North East has literally decided to do everything to make Debojit Saha, a local from Silchar, the ultimate winner.

Except the seven state governments of north east, everybody has formally and informally appealed to the people to vote for Debojit, with the All Assam Student Union (AASU) leading the whole campaign and all parties joining in.

The Debojit's saga has united the entire North east and it has now become a more emotional fight between North east and the rest.

Every day around 60-70 lakhs SMS and phone calls are being made on his behalf, said a top BSNL official admitting that he has sent 20 SMSes today itself.

In Cachar district, Deputy Commissioner Sunanda is himself leading the charge while in rest of Assam, there are newspaper advertisements, cycle processions, daily appeals and even fan clubs urging, cajoling people to vote.

In Guwahati alone there are 24 PCOs made open by generous sponsors for free phone calls. ''It is a question of pride and fight against systematic negligence towards the North East,'' said AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya.
