Congress walkout in Chhattisgarh assembly
Raipur, Feb 22 (UNI) Opposition Congress today staged a walkout in the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha, alleging irregularities in the Mandi elections in the state.
Raising the issue during zero hour, Mr Bhupesh Baghel, Mr Dharamjit Singh and Mr Ravindra Choubey (all Congress) demanded a discussion on their notice for adjournment over irregularities in the Mandi elections.
However, Speaker Prem Prakash Pandey said it was not possibile to have a debate in the House as the elections were conducted by the state election commission, which, he said, was an independent organisation.
But the Congress members insisted that a debate was necessary over the role of district collectors in the Mandi elections.
Alleging irregularities in the Mandi polls, Mr Mohammad Akbar (Congress) alleged that Rajnandgaon district collector had declared the results of Mandi polls a week after the counting and declared the defeated as president of Gandai Mandi. Later, the High Court stayed the collector's order, he pointed out.
The Congress members staged a walkout after the Speaker disallowed a debate on the issue.
