Cong terms verdict in Best Bakery as defeat of Modi

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) The Congress today termed the court judgement on Best Bakery case as a victory of justice and defeat of Narendra Modi Government and all it stands for, saying it was a vindication of the stand of the party and a large section of the society.

It was the brutal killing that took place in March 2002,against which the Congress had raised its voice demanding justice for the victims, Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvvi said.

He recalled that statutory bodies like the National Human Rights Commission had condemned the way the criminal proceedings went on in Gujarat. It was in April 2004 that the Apex Court had given its landmark judgement transferring the case out of Gujarat passing strictures on the way the prosecution had proceeded.

It was a sorry spectacle of a baised prosecution as far as the Chief Minister was concerned and there was a complete lack of protection of the witnesses, he said, adding Mr Modi tried his best to achieve his ulterior motives, but did not succeed.

Mr Singhvi said today's verdict had set right the non-level playing field to victims, giving them justice.
