Chennai, Feb 22 (UNI) Chile is keen on working closely with India in the areas of science and technology, besides having a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the country, Deputy Speaker of Chilean Parliament Jaime Gazmuri said today.

Mr Gazmuri, who is on a nine-day visit to India on the invitation of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, said the Latin American country already had a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with India, covering about 300 products on both sides.

Stating that PTA was the first step in the trade process, he expressed hope that it would soon lead to a Free Trade Agreement with India. China was also keen on having cultural exchanges with the country, he told reporters here at an interactive session. Chile had positioned itself as a gateway to Latin America from Asia, he said and invited Indian companies to set up their regional heaquarters for Latin America in Santiago.

Dwelling on the significance of parliamentary diplomacy, Mr Gazmuri said Parliament, which represent a cross-section of the society, must keep abreast of things happening on the bilateral and multilateral fronts of a country's foreign affairs.
