Belgaum issue: MES legislators stage walkout

Bangalore, Feb 24 (UNI) Two Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi legislators today staged a walkout when the Karnataka Governor began his address to the joint session of the Legislature, condemning the previous Dharam Singh-led government's action of superceding the Belgaum City Corporation for passing a resolution.

When the Governor got up to deliver his address, Mr Digambar Patil from Khanapur and Mr Manohar Kinekar from Uchagaon in Belgaum district, staged a walkout registering their protest.

In a memorandum to the Governor, copies of which were released to reporters, they demanded the restoration of the Constitutional status to the Corporation.

The state government had dissolved the Corporation for passing a resolution in October last seeking the merger of Marathi-speaking areas of the state with the neighbouring Maharashtra.

Condemning the assault on the ousted Belgaum city Mayor for passing the resolution, they alleged the Marathi community in the state was meted out with unfair treatment.
