21 additional foreigner's tribunals in Assam
Guwahati, Feb 23 (UNI) The Assam government has established 21 additional foreigners tribunals in addition to the existing eleven for detection of foreigners in the state.
This came in the wake of the Supreme Court's judgement of July 12 last after a writ petition was filed by Mr Sarbananda Sonowal against the Government of India.
The question as to whether a person is or is not a foreigner within the meaning of the Foreigners Act, 1964, may be referred to specifically to such tribunals for opinion.
The headquarters of the newly established tribunals will be at Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Barpeta (2nd and 3rd tribunals), Nalbari, Guwahati (Metro) Guwahati (Rural), Mangaldoi, Tezpur, North Lakhimpur, Sivsagar, Nagaon, Silchar, Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Morigaon (ist and 2nd tribunals), Karimganj and Dhemaji.
The notification establishing the additional tribunals was issued by the state government on January 24.
