The deity, worshipped as a Linga with jasmine flowers (Mallika in Telugu), is named Mallikarjuna.The temple is sacred to both Shaivism and Shaktism, being one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and eighteen Shakti Pithas. Shiva, as Mallikarjuna, is worshiped in lingam form, while Parvati is revered as Bhramaramba.The temple features a Sahasra Linga (1000 lingas) said to be commissioned by Rama and five lingas by the Pandavas. The Sri Bhramarambika Sametha Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam has a history dating back to the 2nd century, with Satavahana-era inscriptions confirming its existence. Significant expansions took place under King Harihara I of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the Reddi Kingdom, devoted followers of Sri Bhramarambha Mallikarjuna Swamy, constructed the Veerasheromandapam and Paathalaganga steps.
