The temple is revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil poet saints known as the Nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.

The temple has many inscriptions indicating contributions from the Cholas and Thanjai Nayak Kings. The oldest parts of the present masonry structure were built during the Chola dynasty, with later expansions attributed to the Thanjai Nayaks during the 16th century.     The temple is associated with a sage named Herandar, who is believed to have brought the Kaveri River to the earth through an underground passage. The river's convoluted flow gave the place its name, Tiruvalanjuzhi. When he returned to retrieve it, the idol would not budge, so it remained there.
