According to legend, Goddess Mahalakshmi performed penance here, bathing in the Sathya Ganga Theertham (now called Hari Theertham) and subsisting solely on Arunellikai fruits to obtain a boon from Lord Shiva to always remain by Lord Vishnu's side. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva granted her the boon. Consequently, the place was named Hari Mangai, which over time evolved into Ariyamangai. Additionally, it is said that Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva at this site, leading to the deity being named Hari Muktheeswarar.
