Belur Math was established in January 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. It became the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. The Math was designed to train young men as sannyasis and engage in philanthropic activities. The temple's architecture reflects Swami Vivekananda's experiences in India and abroad.

Nearest airport: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. From the airport, you can take a taxi or bus to Howrah and then proceed to Belur via local transport.
October to March is the best time to visit due to pleasant weather. Avoid the monsoon season (June to September) due to heavy rainfall.
