Wickets Fall on Day 1 of World Test Championship Final Between South Africa and Australia

Australia turned the tables on South Africa by the end of the first day of the World Test Championship at Lords. Despite a challenging morning, Australia’s bowlers dominated, reducing South Africa to 43-4 by stumps. The pitch favoured bowlers, with 14 wickets falling for 255 runs. Kagiso Rabada took 5-51 and Marco Jansen 3-49, dismissing Australia for 212. However, Australia's bowlers were even more effective.

Wickets Fall on Day 1 of WTC Final

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and captain Pat Cummins restricted South Africa's batters effectively. Starc dismissed Aiden Markram for a duck in the first over and Ryan Rickelton for 16. Although Alex Carey dropped Wiaan Mulder on 1, Mulder was eventually bowled by Cummins for 6. Temba Bavuma survived to reach stumps on 3 off 37 balls, but Tristan Stubbs was bowled by Hazlewood for 2.

South Africa's Bowling Strategy

Winning the toss, Bavuma chose to bowl first, capitalising on overcast conditions. Rabada and Jansen exploited the bowler-friendly pitch. Rabada dismissed Usman Khawaja for a duck and Cameron Green for 4 in one over. Marnus Labuschagne struggled to find rhythm and was caught behind off Jansen after scoring 17 from 56 balls.

Steve Smith and Travis Head attempted to stabilise Australia’s innings but Head fell just before lunch to a spectacular catch by Kyle Verreynne off Jansen. Australia was at 67-4 at lunch as the sun began to shine, making batting conditions slightly easier.

Australia's Batting Highlights

Smith capitalised on the improved conditions, reaching his half-century with his ninth boundary. Beau Webster, although struggling initially against Rabada and Jansen, accelerated once they were off the attack. Smith and Webster added 79 runs together before Smith edged Markram to Jansen.

Webster reached his second test fifty as he and Carey took Australia to tea at 190-5. However, post-tea, Carey fell to Keshav Maharaj and the rest of the tail collapsed quickly. Rabada and Jansen cleaned up the innings in just over half an hour.

South Africa's Batting Struggles

South Africa's reply started poorly with Starc dismissing both openers early. Mulder resisted briefly but was bowled by Cummins. Bavuma survived some close calls but remained not out at stumps. David Bedingham ended the day with two consecutive boundaries, providing some respite in an otherwise difficult innings.

Australia is defending its World Test Championship title won in 2023, while South Africa seeks its first ICC trophy this century. Despite Rabada's impressive performance earning him a standing ovation, it was Australia's fans who were celebrating by day's end.
