Vinesh Phogat Paris Olympics 2024 Disqualification: PT Usha Puts Direct Blame On...

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha addressed the controversy surrounding Vinesh Phogat's weigh-in mishap at the Paris Olympics 2024. She emphasised that athletes are responsible for managing their weight, and criticised the attacks on Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala as "unacceptable and worthy of condemnation." Vinesh was disqualified from her freestyle 50kg gold-medal bout for being 100gm overweight, leading her to announce her retirement.

The incident sparked a blame game and even caused an uproar in Parliament. Some accused Dr. Pardiwala and his team of negligence, with former IOA chief Narendra Batra suggesting that Vinesh's diet might have contributed to her disqualification. Usha clarified, "...the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team."

Support Teams and Responsibilities

Usha highlighted that each Indian athlete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games had their own support team. These teams have been working with the athletes for many years. The IOA appointed a medical team a few months ago to assist with recovery and injury management during and after competitions. This team also supported athletes who did not have their own nutritionists and physiotherapists.

Vinesh Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category on Tuesday night. However, her post-participation weight increased, and despite measures such as cutting off her hair, she was still found to be 100gm over during the morning weigh-in.

Appeal to Court of Arbitration for Sports

Following her disqualification, Vinesh appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). She demanded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to Vinesh but was promoted to the final after Vinesh's disqualification. American Sarah Hildebrandt won gold after defeating Lopez in the title clash.

The decision on Vinesh's appeal is expected on August 13. Usha hoped those rushing to judge the IOA medical team would consider all facts before arriving at conclusions.

"...the hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr. Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation," Usha reiterated in her statement.

This incident has highlighted the importance of proper weight management in sports like wrestling. It also underscores the need for clear communication between athletes, their support teams, and medical staff to avoid such unfortunate outcomes in future competitions.
