Vinesh Phogat Appeals for Joint Silver After Olympic Disqualification

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has contested her disqualification from the 50kg category Olympic finals. She filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking a joint silver medal after being disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the morning weigh-in.

Vinesh Appeals Olympic Disqualification

An Indian Olympic Association (IOA) source confirmed the appeal, stating, "Yes, we got to know about it. It has been done by her team." Vinesh's disqualification came after she was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit. Her efforts to meet the weight requirement included extreme measures such as fasting, avoiding fluids, and staying up all night to sweat it out, which led to severe dehydration.

Arbitration Setup and Proceedings

An ad-hoc division of CAS has been established at the Games to resolve disputes arising during the Olympics or within ten days before the Opening Ceremony. The matter concerning Vinesh will be addressed on Thursday morning. Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to Vinesh in the semifinals, has replaced her in the final.

The international governing body for wrestling, United World Wrestling (UWW), informed the IOA that the current weigh-in rule leading to Vinesh's disqualification cannot be altered at this time. Therefore, any chance of Vinesh receiving a silver medal now depends on the CAS ruling.

Internal Remedies and Appeal Process

The rules for admitting such cases are explicit. Before filing a request with CAS, the claimant must exhaust all internal remedies available under the sports body's statutes or regulations. The only exception is if exhausting these remedies would render an appeal to CAS ineffective due to time constraints.

Vinesh made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category on Tuesday night. She was guaranteed at least a silver medal before her disqualification.

The appeal process will determine if Vinesh can still secure a silver medal despite her disqualification. The outcome hinges on whether CAS finds merit in her case against the weigh-in rule that led to her exclusion from the finals.
