US Women's Volleyball Team Secures Semifinal Spot with Victory Over Poland
The U.S. women's volleyball team, reigning Olympic champions, secured a straight-set win against Poland on Tuesday night at the Paris Olympics. The Americans dominated the first two sets with scores of 25-22 and 25-14. Despite trailing 5-0 and 7-1 in the third set, they rallied to win 25-20.

Next, they face Brazil in the semifinals on Thursday. Brazil had earlier defeated the Dominican Republic. This match is a rematch of the Tokyo Games final. Turkey also advanced by eliminating China with a 3-2 victory and awaited the outcome of Italy vs Serbia to determine their next opponent.
Lineup Changes and Recovery
U.S. coach Karch Kiraly expressed relief at winning in straight sets, especially for setter Jordyn Poulter, who is recovering from a severe knee injury sustained in December 2022. "To be able to chip away and get back and tie it up at 13-all and get out with 3-0 instead of 17-15 in the fifth, which happens so often, that's really big, especially for somebody like Jordyn Poulter who's on a really good recovery," Kiraly said.
Kiraly made significant lineup changes after losing to China on July 29. Veterans Jordan Larson and Kelsey Robinson Cook were moved to reserve roles, while Avery Skinner and Kathryn Plummer were brought into the starting lineup. This new lineup helped the team bounce back with a win against Serbia two days later.
Team Performance and Contributions
Andrea Drews led the team with 13 points, while Plummer and Skinner each added 12 points. Plummer praised the team's improved service pressure and highlighted four-time Olympian Larson's contributions off the bench. "We started out the third set very slow, we tend to do that even when we have a 2-0 lead in the match," she said.
Plummer noted that getting out of the first rotation was crucial. "We got out of that first rotation and then I think we just got strings of points together, had a couple of big momentum swings with some big blocks, some big serves... The third set was a testament to what happens when we stay together and connected."
Building Momentum
Kiraly mentioned that this new starting lineup has only played three matches together, beginning with their game against Serbia. "The first time we ever played with this starting lineup was against Serbia, so now we've got three matches," he said. "Most other teams have been playing for years with the same lineup. We now have three matches, so things are coming together."
The U.S. team's ability to adapt quickly to new lineups and strategies will be crucial as they prepare for their semifinal clash against Brazil. The focus remains on maintaining momentum and ensuring players like Poulter continue their recovery without additional strain.
As they advance in the tournament, the U.S. women's volleyball team aims to build on their recent successes and secure another Olympic title. Their upcoming match against Brazil will be a significant test of their resilience and teamwork.
