Triveni Kings Triumph Over PBG Knights to Secure Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Title

Triveni Continental Kings, led by Iranian-born French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja, triumphed over PBG Alaskan Knights at Friends House to retain the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League title. Triveni won two intense matches, first defeating the Knights 9-7 with white pieces and then securing a 13-7 victory with black. The champions earned USD 500,000.

Triveni Kings Win Global Chess League Title

Former women's world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk delivered a stellar performance in the second game, defeating Tan Zhongyi and preventing the Knights from forcing tiebreaks. Kosteniuk's efforts earned her the Player of the Match award. "Amazing how chess can be so exciting," said Firouzja, Triveni’s Icon player. "I am very happy and delighted to be part of this amazing event and show."

Knights' Strong Season Ends in Disappointment

The PBG Alaskan Knights had a strong season, winning eight out of ten matches before the final. However, they had to settle for second place and USD 250,000 in prize money. Despite their solid defence throughout the season, they couldn't overcome Triveni in the final.

Triveni's journey to the final was challenging, having lost four matches. They narrowly defeated Magnus Carlsen’s Alpine SG Pipers in the last round to reach the summit clash. The Knights won the first toss and chose to play with black pieces.

Key Moments in the Matches

Firouzja played aggressively against Anish Giri, sacrificing an exchange but gaining a pawn advantage. Although Giri fought back, Firouzja maintained his sharpness despite time pressure and secured a win. A draw between Triveni’s Teimour Radjabov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov put Triveni ahead 4-1.

Two more draws followed: one between Javokhir Sindarov and Nihal Sarin, and another between Valentina Gunina and Alina Kashlinskaya. A crucial moment came when Alexandra Kosteniuk defeated Tan Zhongyi, refusing an earlier draw offer. This bold move sealed the match for Triveni before the final board concluded.

Pressure Mounts in Rematch

In the rematch, pressure mounted on the Knights as they needed a win to stay in contention. Playing with white pieces, they adopted aggressive strategies. Initially promising for the Knights, Triveni soon took control with Valentina gaining an advantageous position against Alina.

Alina succumbed under pressure, losing a piece despite attempts to counter with checks. Valentina secured a win for Triveni, earning four crucial points. Mamedyarov gained an extra pawn against Radjabov but ran out of time despite resisting resignation. The score stood at 5-4 for Triveni.

Dramatic Turn of Events

Firouzja made a queen sacrifice under severe time pressure against Giri to save his position. With just seconds left on his clock, Giri focused on time management but ended up in a lost position. Despite Firouzja's speed, he lost on time, giving Knights a 7-5 lead.

A shocking turn occurred when Nodirbek Abdusattorov blundered in time trouble on board two, misplaying a drawn endgame and losing it entirely. This mistake handed Triveni back the lead. Everything depended on board four where Tan Zhongyi needed to defeat Kosteniuk to force a playoff.

Tan had a significant time advantage but blundered under pressure, losing to Kosteniuk and securing Triveni's 13-7 victory.
