Swapnil Kusale Clinches Bronze in Paris Olympics Shooting Event
Ace marksman Swapnil Kusale, who clinched a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in the 50m rifle 3 positions event, attributed his success to staying calm under pressure and managing the hot weather conditions. Kusale, who received a grand welcome upon his arrival in Pune, expressed his gratitude towards his family and coaches for their sacrifices that contributed to his achievement.

The 29-year-old marksman thanked the government for organising training camps abroad and providing financial support during an interaction at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Complex in Balewadi. "The Government of India gave a huge support to us by arranging camps in foreign locations so as to adjust with climatic conditions," he said. He highlighted the challenges faced in the 50m rifle 3 positions event, such as wind, weather, and light-related issues.
Kusale, who hails from Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, visited the famous Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple in Pune to offer prayers after arriving at the Pune international airport. He is only the second individual Olympic medal winner from Maharashtra. The Maharashtra government announced a prize of Rs 1 crore for him following his bronze medal win.
Support from Government
Kusale emphasised that training camps in foreign conditions helped him learn new techniques and adapt to different climates. "A player has to face hot and cold climates. So when a player gets a chance to go abroad for practice, it helps a lot," he maintained. These camps were crucial in helping him stay composed during the competition despite the intense heat at the shooting range.
Reflecting on his match day experience, Kusale said, "On the match day for medal, it was very hot out there at the shooting range but I kept myself calm and also kept pressure at bay." His ability to remain focused under challenging conditions played a significant role in his podium finish.
Recognition and Rewards
After winning the bronze medal, Kusale received a promotion from his employer, Central Railway. He was appointed as an officer on special duty, nine years after joining as a commercial-cum-ticket clerk in its Pune Division. This recognition came alongside other accolades he had previously earned, including gold medals at the Asian Games in China in 2023, the World Cup in Baku Azerbaijan in 2022, and New Delhi in 2021.
Kusale also commented on wrestler Vinesh Pogat's disqualification from the 50kg women's gold medal match due to being overweight by 100 grams just before the final. He empathised with her situation, stating that as an athlete, he understands the emotional turmoil one goes through in such circumstances.
The ace shooter’s journey has been marked by consistent performance and dedication. His achievements have brought pride not only to his state but also to the entire nation.
